India's green economy is expanding fast and could create 7.29 million green jobs by the financial year 2027-28, rising to 35 million by 2047, says a new report by NLB Services. The report estimates the green sector could be worth $1 trillion by 2030 and $15 trillion by 2070.

Green jobs, once rare, are now growing in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and eco-friendly construction. “Green careers now require knowledge in AI, IoT, GIS, blockchain, and data tools,” said NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug. He added that both technical and sustainability skills are now essential.

Employers are moving away from just hiring based on degrees and are now focusing on hands-on skills. Many companies are working with colleges to teach sustainability and offer re-skilling programs. This change is helping more people enter green jobs from different backgrounds.

Demand is rising faster than expected, especially in sectors like waste management, green buildings, and sustainable textiles. Big cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai lead in green job creation. But Tier II and Tier III cities like Indore, Bhubaneswar, and Coimbatore will make up 35–40% of new green jobs by FY28.

New green careers include roles in ESG analytics, climate data analysis, and green tech, which are expected to grow by 20–30% each year. As India focuses more on sustainability, green jobs are likely to become a key part of the country's workforce growth.
