India, EU to discuss trade barriers soon
New Delhi
India and the European Union (EU) will hold the next round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks in New Delhi from May 12 to 16. Both sides have agreed to work on pending matters, especially focusing on non-tariff barriers (NTBs) alongside tariffs. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Brussels to review progress and prepare for future talks.
India stressed that NTBs—rules or practices that can affect imports—must be addressed to make real progress. The two leaders also agreed to continue monthly meetings and virtual discussions to keep talks moving.
The FTA aims to support digital trade, improve supply chains, and promote fair rules for both Indian and European businesses. It also seeks to boost market access and encourage innovation through stronger ties.
Minister Goyal wrote on social media that both parties want to finish the agreement by the end of 2025. He said the discussions were “highly productive” and showed strong partnership between India and the EU.
In 2023–24, goods traded between India and the EU were worth USD 137.41 billion. India exported USD 75.92 billion and imported USD 61.48 billion. The EU is one of India’s largest trade partners, taking in 17% of its exports. India, in return, buys 9% of the EU's goods.
The Commerce Ministry said the FTA will help India reach its development goals and strengthen global partnerships based on fair trade. Both India and the EU remain committed to finishing the deal this year.
