Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday that India is handling the US tariff issue wisely and plans to increase trade with the United States by 2.5 times. Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Goyal said talks are going well and India is ahead in making progress toward a strong trade agreement.

He explained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump agreed in February to boost trade and strengthen relations. The goal is to reach $500 billion in trade, up from current levels. Goyal said this increase will create jobs and help grow India’s economy.

Recently, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for 60 countries, including India, but raised tariffs on China to 125%. In response, China announced an 84% tariff on US goods. Despite global tensions, Goyal said India is staying focused on its goals.

During his meeting with exporters and industry groups, Goyal assured them that India is protecting its interests while moving forward with trade discussions. He also stressed that the government is working to finalize a trade deal that supports India’s long-term economic plans, including the vision for a developed “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

He encouraged industry leaders to stay confident and said the upcoming trade pact could become a major driver of India’s economic growth.
