New Delhi
India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose by 16.4% year-on-year to over ₹2.01 lakh crore in May 2025, according to government data released on Sunday. This follows a record GST collection of ₹2.37 lakh crore in April, showing continued economic momentum.
Domestic transaction revenues rose 13.7% to approximately ₹1.50 lakh crore, while GST from imports increased by 25.2% to ₹51,266 crore. The net GST mop-up, after accounting for refunds, stood at ₹1.74 lakh crore—marking a 20.4% increase from May 2024’s ₹1.72 lakh crore.
The breakdown includes ₹35,434 crore from Central GST, ₹43,902 crore from State GST, ₹1.09 lakh crore from Integrated GST, and ₹12,879 crore from Cess. Refunds issued during May 2025 declined by 4% to ₹27,210 crore.
Tax experts noted disparities in GST growth among states. Deloitte India Partner M. S. Mani highlighted that states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu showed growth between 17% to 25%. In contrast, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana recorded increases of just 6%, while states like Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan saw around 10% growth.
Mani said these variations suggest sector-specific or seasonal factors affecting collections and called for deeper analysis to understand the uneven growth pattern. Despite state-wise differences, the overall upward trend signals healthy consumer demand and a positive outlook for India’s economic activity.
