The Indian government has signed a ₹1,220.12 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for 149 software-defined radios to enhance communication for the Indian Coast Guard. The agreement falls under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, reinforcing the country’s commitment to self-reliance in defense technology.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these advanced radios will improve secure voice and data communication, boosting operational efficiency in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, and marine environment protection. The new system will also enhance interoperability with the Indian Navy for joint operations.
This contract aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting domestic manufacturing of military-grade technology. It is expected to generate employment and develop expertise in advanced communication systems. The deal also supports India's Blue Economy goals by strengthening maritime security.
In a separate contract earlier this month, the Ministry of Defence signed a ₹642 crore deal with BEL, Delhi for 28 EON-51 systems—Electro-Optical Fire Control Systems designed for target detection and tracking using electro-optical and thermal imaging. These systems will be installed on 11 Offshore Patrol Vessels and three Cadet Training Ships for the Indian Navy.
BEL has also secured ₹531 crore in additional defense orders for communication systems, medical electronics, radar homing heads for missiles, and electro-optics. These projects will boost the domestic defense industry and increase India’s capabilities in advanced technology.
With these agreements, the government continues to invest in modernizing the Indian armed forces while promoting indigenous defense production.
