Government pushes growth plans for northeast India
Mumbai
The Indian government plans to turn the northeastern region into a major growth area for the country. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said this during meetings with top business leaders in Mumbai. He stressed that all eight northeastern states must grow together under one development goal.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Development of North-East Region (DoNER), Scindia highlighted public-private partnerships as key to sustainable development. The upcoming ‘Rising Northeast Investment Summit 2025’, set for May 23-24 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, aims to draw major investments into the region.
Scindia met industrialists like Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, and N. Chandrasekaran. He discussed new initiatives such as forming a High-Level Task Force with northeastern Chief Ministers and creating Investment Promotion Agencies in each state.
Officials from the DoNER ministry also presented various investment opportunities in sectors like agriculture, textiles, and tourism. These discussions aim to unlock the economic potential of the region.
In another boost for connectivity, the government approved a ₹22,864 crore project to build a 166.80 km high-speed greenfield highway from Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam. This road will pass through key cement and coal areas in Meghalaya, spurring regional industry.
Of the total length, 144.80 km lies in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam. The highway will enhance movement between the two states and support economic growth in the northeast.
The government’s efforts show a clear strategy to make the northeast a vital part of India’s growth story.
