At the 2nd North East Mining Ministers’ Conclave held in Sonapur near Guwahati, Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy stressed the importance of sustainable mining in India’s resource-rich northeast region. He said the Centre aims to attract investment and innovation while maintaining environmental balance.

In a social media post, Minister Reddy said the conclave is a major step toward sustainable mining, ease of doing business, and stronger cooperation between central and state governments. He added that the event will likely boost future investments and inclusive growth across the Northeast.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also spoke at the event. He highlighted the state’s push toward sustainable mining based on the circular economy model, which reduces waste and promotes reuse. “The region has vast natural resources and great mining potential,” Sarma said, adding that the conclave offered a valuable platform to discuss the sector’s future.

The Chief Minister noted that Assam has already attracted over ₹46,000 crore in mining commitments. He also mentioned the approval of a Minor Mineral Exploration Trust to speed up mineral discovery.

Sarma added that a new state mining policy is in its final stage and expected soon. This policy will focus on attracting investments, launching community-based projects, and increasing exploration of rare earth elements.

Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey also joined the opening session, along with industry stakeholders and ministers from other northeastern states. The conclave highlighted the central government’s aim to balance economic development with environmental care through zero-waste and sustainable mining practices.
