The standoff between Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU) and Samsung management has intensified, with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) calling for mass protests in Kancheepuram today (Friday).
CITU will demonstrate across four State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) locations and block the gates of Samsung’s Sriperumbudur factory to prevent contract workers from entering. Additionally, a district-wide strike is planned for March 7.
The union demands reinstatement of three suspended SIWU office-bearers. However, Samsung is allegedly planning to suspend 18 more workers. Conciliation talks on February 19, mediated by Tamil Nadu labour officials, failed to resolve the issue.
The protest began on February 5, with 500 Samsung employees staging a sit-in. SIWU was officially registered after a 38-day strike and a 212-day legal battle.
A Samsung India spokesperson stated that the company remains committed to resolving issues directly but warned that disciplinary action would be taken against those violating company policies.
Samsung’s Sriperumbudur plant, which employs 1,800 workers, contributes significantly to the company's India sales. The upcoming protests could disrupt industrial operations across Kancheepuram.
