BIS seizes more substandard goods from e-commerce warehouses
New Delhi
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized a large number of substandard products from Amazon and Flipkart warehouses in recent raids, continuing its crackdown on the sale of faulty goods on e-commerce platforms. According to a statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Thursday, goods without the mandatory ISI mark or bearing fake ISI labels were confiscated.
On March 19, BIS officials conducted a 15-hour raid at Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd’s warehouse in Delhi’s Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area. The operation led to the seizure of over 3,500 products, including geysers, food mixers, and electrical appliances, valued at around Rs 70 lakhs. Many of these items either lacked an ISI mark or displayed counterfeit labels.
A similar operation at Instakart Services Pvt Ltd, a Flipkart subsidiary in Trinagar, Delhi, uncovered 590 pairs of sports footwear without the required ISI mark and manufacturing date. These goods, worth around Rs 6 lakh, were also seized.
Over the past month, BIS has carried out similar operations in multiple cities, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow, and Sriperumbudur, seizing various substandard products. These actions are part of BIS’s ongoing efforts to ensure consumer protection and enforce quality standards.
Under the BIS Act, 2016, it is illegal to manufacture, import, or sell products that lack mandatory certification. Violators can face imprisonment, fines, or both. The BIS continues to monitor and enforce compliance to protect consumers from unsafe products.
