Bharti Airtel on Monday has reported significant progress in its fight against spam calls and SMSes. In just two and a half months after launching its AI-powered spam detection system, Airtel flagged over 8 billion spam calls and 800 million spam SMSes. The company’s AI technology has been identifying nearly 1 million spammers every day.

This initiative comes after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a directive for telecom operators to tackle the growing issue of spam communications. Airtel launched its AI-based system in September, which provides real-time alerts to customers about suspected spam calls and messages.

According to the company, over the past two months, nearly 252 million unique customers have been alerted to potential spam. This has led to a 12% drop in the number of customers answering spam calls. Around 6% of calls and 2% of SMSes on Airtel’s network have been flagged as spam.

Interestingly, 35% of spammers have been using landline phones. Geographically, Delhi has seen the highest volume of spam calls, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has led in terms of spam SMSes, with Mumbai, Chennai, and Gujarat being the top targeted regions.

Airtel also found that most spam calls peak between noon and 3 pm, and 76% of spam calls are directed at male customers.

This new AI-powered solution is part of Airtel’s ongoing efforts to reduce spam and enhance customer experience.
