An Indian-origin man in Australia has died days after a police officer allegedly knelt on his neck during an attempted arrest, drawing comparisons to the 2020 George Floyd case in the US.

Gaurav Kundi, 42, from Adelaide’s Modbury North, passed away on Thursday after suffering an “unrecoverable” brain injury, according to 7News Australia. He had been hospitalised following the incident on Payneham Road in Royston Park.

The police claim they intervened after witnessing what they believed to be a domestic dispute between Kundi and his wife, Amritpal Kaur. Video footage showed officers restraining Kundi as he shouted, “I’ve done nothing wrong,” while Kaur, filming the scene, cried out that the arrest was unjust.

Police say Kundi was intoxicated and resisted arrest. Kaur, however, insisted he was only drunk and not violent. She said their argument was misunderstood.

Kundi became unresponsive during the arrest and was rushed to hospital, where he later died. No taser was used, and no shots were fired, police confirmed.

South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide that both an internal investigation and a full review of police procedures, training, and response methods would be conducted.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, with media comparing it to the death of George Floyd, whose killing by a US police officer led to global protests against police brutality.

Kundi’s death has raised urgent questions about use-of-force policies in Australia and has prompted calls for accountability from both the public and civil rights advocates.
