A grant of $30 million has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to improve maternal and child healthcare services in three districts of Tajikistan. The grant will be used to support the construction of a 40-bed maternity hospital in Ayni, an 80-bed maternity hospital in Dangara, and a 100-bed central district hospital in Darvoz. The hospitals will include climate-friendly features, such as energy-efficient medical, heating, and cooling technology.

A digital asset management system will be implemented to ensure proper inventory and maintenance of medical equipment. Staff will be trained to operate this system. The project will also work on improving the management and training of health workers, refining tools and processes for perinatal services, and piloting case-based financing to streamline hospital funding mechanisms. Outreach initiatives will be launched to raise awareness and encourage the use of maternal and child healthcare services.

The ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, stated that despite Tajikistan's progress in health improvements, including increased life expectancy and reduced maternal mortality, there remains uneven access and quality of healthcare based on geography and socioeconomic status. The ADB's support aims to address these issues by improving health facilities and staff capacity in the three districts.

This project is a supplement to a $32 million ADB grant approved in 2018 for the Maternal and Child Health Integrated Care project in Fayzobod, Rasht, and Shamsiddin Shohin districts. Tajikistan has been a member of the ADB since 1998.
