The Police department said goodbye to the system of writing receipts for traffic violations in the state. The e-challan system has been implemented across the state. Karnataka has become the first state to fully implement this system, said Additional Director General of Police and Traffic and Road Safety Commissioner Alok Kumar.

E-challan is a digital document containing details of traffic violations and fines, which the traffic police personnel will have a specific swiping device to access. When a challan is received through e-challan for traffic violation, it is also recorded in the server of the police department. Due to this, it is not possible to cancel (tear) the receipt by taking a bribe. It will go paperless and reduce work towards digitizing traffic management and enforcing transparency.

At present, the state police department has entered into an agreement with SBI Bank for this system, and the money paid by the motorists will be directly deposited into the official account of the department. For effective implementation of this system, 1,766 e-challan machines have been issued to police personnel of 722 law and order stations and 64 traffic stations across the state. Motorists who violate traffic rules can pay the fine through various modes including UPI, debit card and cash payment. The e-challan system has already been successful in Bangalore and now the same system has been extended across the state. Motorists will be fined through e-challan when the traffic staff conducts special operations against various crimes including driving without helmet, driving under the influence of alcohol. Motorists will have seven days to pay the fine virtually.
