GADAG: In celebration of the upcoming International Year of Cooperatives–2025, a sapling planting programme was organized with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and sustainable development through cooperative initiatives.
The event began with SS Kabade, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, lighting the ceremonial lamp. In his address, he emphasized the urgency of environmental protection in today’s pollution-affected world. “Rising illnesses and food adulteration are direct consequences of environmental neglect. Planting trees under schemes like the ‘Ek Peda Ma Ke Naam’ will create a healthier environment for future generations,” he said.
SK Kuradagi, Director of the District Cooperative Union, stressed the importance of launching such initiatives from the grassroots level. “Clean air, pure water, and nutritious food are key to a healthy life. Let's begin this movement today on World Environment Day,” he urged.
N Aravind, Deputy Director of the Cooperative Societies Audit Department, highlighted the need to reduce chemical dependency in agriculture. “Nature satisfies our needs, not our greed. Using organic manure like cow dung and sheep dung helps prevent soil erosion and maintains soil fertility,” he explained.
CM Patil, President of the District Cooperative Union, said the plantation drive will be part of the broader activities planned for the International Year of Cooperatives 2025. He called upon all cooperative societies in the district to plant saplings around their offices, village roads, playgrounds, parks, and gram panchayats to foster a green and healthy environment.
The programme marks the beginning of a year-long series of eco-friendly initiatives driven by the cooperative sector, with the goal of building a more sustainable and community-driven future.
