Forests, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre spoke at the Basava Jayanti celebration about the unique social revolution that took place in Kalyana. Unlike other revolutions focused on women, wealth, or land, Kalyana saw a movement for equality and the creation of an egalitarian society. The vision of Basavadi Sharanas was to build a community free from superstition, untouchability, social hierarchy, and caste, a dream still unfulfilled after 800 years.

Khandre highlighted the example of Akka Mahadevi, noting that Basavadi Sharanas granted women equality and honored them with the title ‘Mahadevi,’ symbolizing equal status. They advocated women’s freedom and equality as early as the 12th century. He emphasized that vachanas, the poetic writings of the Sharanas, offer solutions to current social issues, such as youth addiction to alcohol and drugs, guiding individuals back to the right path.

The Minister mentioned the ongoing construction of the modern Anubhava Mantapa in Basavakalyana, costing Rs 700 crore. This project includes carvings of vachanas representing all 770 eternal professions to honor the dignity of labor and uplift the Sharana village. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has already released Rs 120 crore, with an additional Rs 400 crore expected to complete the Mantapa by next year.

Khandre expressed concern over current social divisions fueled by hatred, jealousy, and attempts to create conflict between castes and religions. He asserted that the principles of Basavadi Sharanas offer a remedy to unite society. The event was attended by MLAs BY Vijayendra, Srivatsa, MP Yaduveer Wadiyar, and Harachara Gurumurthy.
