The 5th state-level distributors' conference and World Press Distributors' Day celebrations will be held in Mysore on August 27 and 28. K. Shambhulingappa, President of the State Press Distributors' Association, urged office bearers to prepare diligently to ensure the success of the event.
Speaking at the State Newspaper Distributors' Federation Executive Committee Meeting, Shambhulingappa highlighted the relentless efforts of newspaper deliverers who brave rain, wind, and cold to serve homes daily. The union, established in 2019, aims to protect distributors' interests.
The upcoming conference seeks to preserve the distributors’ role and present their demands to the government. Key demands include the establishment of a welfare fund worth ₹10 crore in the name of newspaper distributors. The union also advocates providing housing plots under the shelter scheme and special scholarships for distributors’ children. Additionally, a ₹5 lakh compensation is requested for families in case of premature death of a distributor.
Other demands include subsidized electric bikes for distributors and a monthly pension of ₹22,000 for those aged over 60. The conference will urge the government to fulfill these requests.
Plans are underway to open a union office in the capital and construct a community hall to host programs for distributors and their families. The union also seeks recognition of distributors as academy members.
Shambhulingappa emphasized the importance of responsible leadership and assured that accommodation, food, and all arrangements for conference attendees have been made.
