The long delay in redeveloping the City Bus Terminus (CBT) at Akkipet in Dharwad is causing major problems for daily commuters and increasing overall project costs. Work on the modern terminal began in January 2024 but has fallen far behind schedule. As a result, passengers are forced to rely on temporary stops located across the city.
Makeshift stops near Kittel College and behind LEA Canteen have become especially inconvenient. Commuters often walk long distances or pay high fares to reach busy areas like the city market. Autorickshaw and tum-tum drivers are reportedly taking advantage of the situation, overcharging passengers—especially senior citizens and schoolchildren—due to the lack of fare regulation.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy had earlier promised the terminal would be ready within a year during his visit last January. However, officials now estimate the work could take another 8–10 months. A senior department officer said initial technical setbacks and heavy monsoon rains were major causes of the delay. He added that construction has recently picked up pace and the terminal could be ready by January, with operations starting in February.
Meanwhile, temporary shelters offer poor protection, becoming waterlogged during rains. Elderly people have slipped and autos are exploiting the situation, said commuter Maruti Mane.
The new CBT is designed as a multi-storey terminal with modern facilities and shops. It is expected to serve thousands of daily passengers and over 60 city buses. However, with no new buses added, private vehicles and auto drivers have taken over, often clashing with NWKRTC staff. NWKRTC MD Priyanga M has now stated that efforts are underway to complete the terminal by September.
