The inflow to the Tungabhadra Reservoir has decreased significantly, prompting authorities to release 2,000 cusecs of water through the Munirabad hydroelectric power station into the left bank main canal and the river since Monday evening. However, the reservoir’s crest gates remain closed, and no water is being released directly from them at this time, according to sources from the Tungabhadra Board.
For now, water is being diverted primarily for power generation before being released into the canal and river. The board will make further decisions based on the evolving situation.
Over the past two days, inflow remained above 60,000 cusecs, but on Tuesday, the average flow dropped to 33,916 cusecs. Currently, the reservoir’s water level stands at 1,624.38 feet, with a storage capacity of 74.48 tmc feet.
Typically, July and August witness the highest rainfall, and an increase in inflow is expected in the coming days. Since authorities have decided against storing water at maximum capacity this season, it is likely that the crest gates will be opened soon to release excess water into the river to manage reservoir levels.
