To address regional imbalance, efforts should focus on increasing the per capita income of people in backward taluks. Necessary facilities and proper planning are essential for this, said Prof. M Govinda Rao, Chairman of the Karnataka Regional Imbalance Remediation Committee and an economic expert.
Speaking at the Mysore division-level dialogue meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat Hall, he stated that the committee began its work in September 2024. The Nanjundappa report, which analyzed 35 indices, had recommended development measures, and Rs 31,000 crore has already been spent. However, progress remains slow in many areas, requiring a detailed reassessment.
MLA C Anil Kumar highlighted the lack of infrastructure in HD Taluk and Saragur Taluk, citing poor road connectivity, insufficient buses, and vacant teacher posts in schools. He urged the committee to allocate grants based on area size to ensure social justice in development.
Prof. Surya Narayan pointed out that despite being developed, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts still lack basic facilities, such as science labs in Brahmavar schools. He stressed the need for better education and infrastructure.
Entrepreneurs, industrialists, and district officials shared their views in the meeting, with Regional Imbalance Committee Director Chandrashekariah also addressing the gathering.
