At least 14 people, including three students, were killed and 25 others were injured in two separate incidents in Uttara Kannada and Raichur districts on Wednesday.
The state government on Wednesday announced Rs 3 lakh solarium to the families of the deceased in the two road accidents in Uttara Kannada and Raichur districts.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said “a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each will be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the two separate accidents in Yellapur of Uttara Kannada district and Sindhanur of Raichur district."
"Additionally, arrangements will be made for free treatment for those injured in the accidents. Haste, over speeding, and negligence are the main causes of accidents. I appeal to everyone to drive cautiously and stay safe," CM Siddaramaiah appealed.
The incident occurred around 4 am on the Yellapur national highway, where a truck carrying vegetables lost control and collided with a tripper lorry before plunging into a 50-metre-deep valley.
According to the Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police, M Narayana, the victims, all fruit vendors, had started from Savanur and were traveling to the Yellapura fair to sell their produce. Narayana said that the truck driver, in an attempt to make way for another vehicle, moved to the extreme left, causing the truck to veer off the road and fall into the valley. Nine individuals died on the spot, while 20 were critically injured and were rushed to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi for treatment.
