Tottenham Hotspur won their first major trophy in 17 years by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final on Thursday. Brennan Johnson scored the only goal just before halftime, helping Spurs lift their first European title since 1984.
The match was tense and lacked clear chances. Tottenham played carefully after scoring and sat deep in the second half to protect their lead. Manchester United had more of the ball but could not break through Tottenham’s defence.
United surprised fans by starting Mason Mount instead of Alejandro Garnacho. Mount had scored in the semifinals, but the team struggled to create good chances. Bruno Fernandes tried to control play for United, but he had little space. Amad Diallo went close, but his shot missed the target.
Tottenham looked more dangerous in attack. Richarlison and Johnson both threatened, especially after a mistake by United defender Harry Maguire. Johnson's goal came when he reacted quickly to a cross from Pape Sarr. The ball hit Luke Shaw and went in.
In the second half, United tried to respond. Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a mistake, but Micky van de Ven cleared the danger. Fernandes shot wide, and in stoppage time, Shaw’s strong header was saved by Vicario.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou kept his promise of winning a trophy in his second season. It is unclear if he will stay for a third, but fans will remember this win as a historic moment.
This was Tottenham's first major title since 2008 and ended a long wait for silverware.
