New Delhi: Former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has joined the England men’s cricket team as a short-term specialist skills consultant. The 36-year-old will support England’s bowlers across all formats until the end of the five-Test series against India.

Southee ended his international career in December 2024. He finished as New Zealand’s top wicket-taker across formats, claiming 776 wickets, including 391 in 107 Tests. He also played 161 ODIs and 126 T20Is, and was part of New Zealand’s 2021 World Test Championship-winning squad.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) welcomed Southee’s experience, calling it valuable for players adapting to different playing conditions.

He will begin his coaching stint when England plays Zimbabwe in a four-day Test match at Trent Bridge starting May 22. Afterward, England’s key five-Test series against India begins on June 20 at Headingley.

Southee’s appointment also reunites him with former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, England’s current head coach. The two share a long friendship and deep cricketing experience.

After the India series ends on August 4, Southee is set to play in The Hundred for Birmingham Phoenix. His mix of recent international play and leadership is expected to help England’s bowlers during a busy cricket summer.
