Former cricketer Kirby Short has been appointed as the new Head of Female Cricket at Cricket Victoria. The former Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire captain brings strong leadership and deep cricketing knowledge to the role.
Short had a successful playing career, captaining Brisbane Heat to back-to-back Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) titles in 2018–19 and 2019–20. She retired from professional cricket in 2020 but remained active in the sport through commentary and leadership roles.
“My grandfather grew up in Fitzroy, so it feels special to contribute to women’s cricket in Victoria,” said Short. “I look forward to working with talented players and staff to build on Victoria’s strong cricketing history.”
Beyond the pitch, Short has held leadership positions in Queensland schools and has worked as a high-performance consultant in both sports and corporate settings, including netball and rugby league. She also served as a Director on the Board of Queensland Cricket and is a familiar voice in commentary on Seven Network and Fox Cricket.
Cricket Victoria said Short will oversee the planning and growth of women’s cricket across the state. Her duties include talent spotting, managing development programs, and ensuring a supportive environment for female players.
Graham Manou, GM of Cricket Performance, praised her appointment. “Kirby’s leadership and experience in elite cricket will be key as we grow the women’s game in Victoria,” he said.
Short is set to officially begin her new role in mid-July, taking charge of efforts to further elevate women's cricket in the state.
