Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has raised concerns about star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s future in Test cricket, hinting that the bowler may retire from the format soon. Kaif shared his views after Bumrah’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Bumrah has bowled 28 overs in England’s first innings, managing just one wicket for 95 runs. He dismissed Jamie Smith in the final session on Friday. But what caught attention was his drop in bowling speed, mostly ranging between 130-135 kmph, compared to the 140+ kmph he clocked earlier in the series at Leeds and Lord’s.
Kaif said in a video on X (formerly Twitter), “Bumrah might not play future Test matches and could even retire. His body seems to be struggling, and he’s an honest man. If he can’t give 100%, he’ll step away.”
Adding to the concern, Bumrah was seen clutching his ankle during the second session, although he returned to bowl later. Commentators also noticed he was bowling cautiously, holding back his usual energy.
Bumrah was already rested for two Tests in the five-match series as part of workload management. Kaif believes the Indian team and fans might have to accept life without Bumrah in Tests.
“His passion is unquestionable,” Kaif added. “But his body is giving up. Indian fans, after Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin, may also need to prepare for a future without Bumrah. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s what I observed.”
