Three people were arrested for throwing an egg at BJP MLA Munirathna during an event in Nandini Layout on Wednesday, police confirmed. The MLA was attending a ceremony to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when the incident occurred.
Munirathna accused Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, his brother D K Suresh, and their associates of orchestrating the attack. He claimed that the attack was an attempt on his life, alleging that around 150 people were brought to harm him. However, he credited the presence of his supporters and the police for preventing the attack from turning fatal.
Shivakumar, who was in Belagavi for the centenary celebrations of the 1924 Indian National Congress session, denied the allegations. Suresh also rejected the claims, accusing Munirathna of threatening Congress workers and suggesting that the MLA staged the attack to distract from other issues.
Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara confirmed the arrests, stating that the investigation is ongoing to determine the identities and motives of the accused. BJP state president B Y Vijayendra condemned the attack, calling it an insult to the state and a serious offense against public representatives. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and former Minister C T Ravi also condemned the incident.
Munirathna, who is facing multiple legal cases, including a rape charge, was recently granted bail.
