Tragedy struck in Pune’s Kundmala area on Sunday afternoon when an old iron bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed, killing at least two people and injuring 32 others. The incident happened around 3:30 PM, when many tourists were gathered at the site to enjoy the monsoon weather. Rescue teams say several people may still be missing in the river.
Officials report that about 100 people were on the 30-year-old bridge when it suddenly gave way. Some managed to swim to safety, while others were swept away by the strong river currents. Six of the injured are in serious condition and receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared his condolences on social media, saying he was deeply saddened by the news. He confirmed that two people have died and that he is in regular contact with rescue teams and local authorities.
Rescue efforts began immediately. The Talegaon Dabhade police were first on the scene, followed by two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who are now leading the search operation. Pimpri-Chinchwad police estimate that 10 to 15 people may still be trapped or missing.
Sunil Shelke, MLA from Maval, said the bridge was old and possibly weakened by recent heavy rainfall. “Some fell off the bridge but managed to reach the shore,” he added.
The bridge, located near an old dam and waterfall, is a popular weekend spot. NCP leader Supriya Sule called the incident “very unfortunate” and urged officials to ensure every missing person is found. She also said she spoke with the Pune District Collector, who assured her that all resources were being used.
As rescue operations continue, fears remain that the death toll could rise.
