Three Delhi residents were detained in Sambhal on Friday for allegedly trying to perform Hindu rituals, including a havan, near the Shahi Jama Masjid, police said. The area was already under tight security due to Friday prayers.

Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi stated the three men were taken into custody near the disputed site and warned not to enter Sambhal again. He said action would be taken for disturbing public order.

One of the detained men, Sanatan Singh, claimed they came for a havan at the Vishnu Harihar temple and questioned why puja wasn’t allowed if namaz could be offered there. The others, Veer Singh Yadav and Anil Singh, echoed similar views.

The incident comes amid ongoing tensions at the site. Last November, violence erupted after a court-ordered survey of the mosque, which is claimed to stand on a former Hindu temple site. Four people died in that unrest.
