Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed heartfelt thanks to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic for gifting him a reprint of the world’s first printed Sanskrit grammar. This historical work, written in Latin in 1790 by Croatian scholar and missionary Filip Vezdin, reflects the deep-rooted cultural and intellectual ties between India and Croatia. PM Modi called the gift a powerful symbol of the strong connection between the two nations and hoped for even closer ties in the future.
Filip Vezdin, also known as Paulinus of St. Bartholomew, learned Sanskrit during his time in India, especially from Kerala Brahmins and local manuscripts. His pioneering grammar book marked one of the earliest serious European studies of Indian languages and culture. Prime Minister Plenkovic shared the moment on social media, highlighting Vezdin’s contributions and the enduring cultural links between the two countries.
As part of the exchange, PM Plenkovic also presented PM Modi with the book Croatia & India, Bilateral Navigator for Croatian Diplomats and Business by Dr. Sinisa Grgic. The book offers a comprehensive view of bilateral relations and aims to encourage future cooperation.
During his visit to Croatia—the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister—PM Modi held detailed discussions with PM Plenkovic in Zagreb. They explored new ways to strengthen ties in areas like trade, defence, science, technology, tourism, and renewable energy. PM Modi also acknowledged the growing interest in Indian culture, Yoga, and Indology in Croatia. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and Croatia's support following the Pahalgam terror attack, calling the solidarity deeply meaningful.
