The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar has taken action following the controversy surrounding the alleged abetment of a student's suicide. Prof B.K. Roy, who faced accusations in the incident, has been replaced as the Dean of Academics. After a 5-day-long hunger strike by students at NIT Silchar, the institute announced the appointment of Prof Brinda Bhowmik from the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department as the new Dean of Academics, effective from Monday. The hunger strike, which began on September 18 in response to the alleged suicide of a third-year Electrical Engineering student, Koj Buker, concluded after assurances were given by the institute's director, Dilip Kumar Baidya. The students had two primary demands: the removal of Prof Roy from his position and no disciplinary action against protesting students. Koj Buker's body was discovered hanging in the institute's Hostel-7 on September 15. Prof B.K. Roy had faced accusations of abetting the suicide, leading to protests and the hunger strike by students. The institute's decision to replace Prof Roy as the Dean of Academics marks a significant development in the ongoing controversy and student protests at NIT Silchar.
