Hyderabad
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) seeking a report on the death of an autorickshaw driver, Mohd Irfan, who allegedly died due to police torture in Hyderabad. The NHRC took suo motu action after media reports said Irfan died on May 13, 2025, following physical abuse at Rajendranagar Police Station.
Irfan was brought to the police station by his wife to resolve a domestic dispute. After counseling, Irfan was taken to a room where police allegedly beat him with rubber belts. Shortly after leaving the station, he began vomiting, collapsed, and was taken to Osmania General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Police claim Irfan collapsed suddenly, denying torture allegations. Irfan’s brother, however, said he heard his cries and that police stopped the family from intervening. A suspicious death case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The NHRC has asked the Telangana DGP to submit a detailed report within two weeks, stating that if the reports are true, this would be a grave human rights violation. The commission is closely monitoring the investigation.
