New Delhi
India expressed its desire for a positive and productive relationship with Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of bilateral ties for the benefit of both nations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that New Delhi’s approach to Dhaka has been constructive and that India remains committed to fostering cooperation.
During recent talks, MEA clarified India’s position on border security, particularly regarding fencing and crime prevention. It was highlighted that New Delhi expects Bangladesh to honor previous agreements to jointly combat cross-border crime, smuggling, and trafficking. Measures such as barbed wire fencing, border lighting, and the installation of technical devices are intended to secure the border.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Bangladesh last December reinforced India’s strong support for a democratic and stable Bangladesh. Misri emphasized the mutual trust and respect necessary for a positive relationship, which would be grounded in both countries' concerns and interests.
A week ago, the Bangladesh Acting High Commissioner to India, Md Nural Islam, was summoned to discuss India’s border security measures. This came after Bangladesh had summoned India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka to voice concerns over the fencing. Despite differences, both sides are committed to enhancing cooperation and ensuring a secure, crime-free border.
