Indore is set to launch India’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) green waste processing plant under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. This facility will recycle wooden waste and tree branches to produce eco-friendly pellets as an alternative to coal, an official said on Tuesday.

Located in Bicholi Hapsi on 55,000 square feet of land, the plant will not only manage green waste efficiently but also generate revenue. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is expected to earn around ₹3,000 per tonne in royalty for supplying wood and branches, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The wooden pellets produced will be supplied to industries like the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) as a sustainable energy source. Large tree branches from across Indore will be processed at the Green Waste Processing Plant in City Forest. Additionally, green waste from major institutions will be collected and sent to the facility for a fixed fee.

Indore generates nearly 30 tonnes of green waste daily, increasing to 60-70 tonnes during autumn. This initiative aims to improve waste management, enhance environmental sustainability, and create additional municipal revenue.

Besides reducing pollution and preventing waste burning, the project will contribute to better air quality. It supports the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban’s goal of making cities garbage-free and promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable urban environment, the statement added.
