New Delhi
Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, the Indian government highlighted its strong efforts to fight plastic pollution. With the theme Beat Plastic Pollution, this day focuses on ending plastic waste globally.
India has put in place strict laws and policies to address plastic waste, showing its commitment to environmental protection. The government enforces bans on single-use plastics and promotes circular economy ideas that encourage recycling and reuse.
Key rules include the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, which ban certain single-use plastic items and thin plastic bags under 120 microns. These bans began in 2022 to reduce litter and pollution. States are also encouraged to impose their own restrictions on plastic use.
The government supports responsible plastic use through initiatives like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which makes companies responsible for managing the plastic waste they produce. Food packaging standards by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) also help regulate safe plastic use.
Additionally, programs like the Swachh Bharat Mission strengthen waste management and cleanliness in both rural and urban areas, focusing on plastic waste reduction and community involvement.
Local bodies play a key role in promoting innovative, community-driven solutions to reduce plastic pollution. The government said, With public support, responsible industry actions, and strong government efforts, India is committed to lowering its plastic footprint and protecting a greener future.
