Ravi Teja, an Indian student from Hyderabad, was tragically shot dead in New Haven, Connecticut, while pursuing his Master's in Science in the U.S. A family friend, Upender Reddy, expressed deep concern, stating that such incidents make Indian students fearful of studying abroad. He urged the Indian and Telangana governments to take swift action to bring Teja's body back to India and ensure better safety for students going abroad. He also emphasized the need for governments to prioritize student security alongside business collaborations.

The Indian Consulate in New York expressed condolences and assured the family of all possible support, including the repatriation of the body. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal also mourned the tragic loss, calling for improved educational opportunities in India to prevent students from feeling compelled to go abroad. He expressed concern over the rising number of such incidents involving Indian youth and urged the government to address the issue.
