Former Indian diplomat Mahesh Sachdev has raised concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claims about helping ease tensions between India and Pakistan.
Sachdev questioned Trump's intentions, suggesting that they may be driven more by personal goals—like winning a Nobel Peace Prize or appealing to his support base—than by genuine diplomatic interest.
He called Trump’s remarks insensitive and hasty, especially for a leader of a major country. Sachdev praised India’s calm and measured response, saying that the official spokesperson effectively clarified India’s stance without escalating the matter.
He emphasized that India continues to uphold the Shimla Agreement, which requires all disputes with Pakistan to be resolved bilaterally and peacefully. Regarding future India-U.S. relations, he said that while there may not be an immediate impact, such statements by a transactional leader like Trump could cast doubts on the long-term reliability and mutual respect between the two nations.
