The Ministry of Education (MoE) has directed the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to update its textbooks yearly, according to sources. This is a change from the previous practice where updates were sporadic, with the most recent revisions occurring in 2017.
The NCERT occasionally revised content and conducted a rationalization exercise due to the pandemic, but there were claims of agenda-driven editing. The new mandate requires textbooks to be reviewed each year to keep them current. Textbooks shouldn't remain the same for years. They need annual reviews to add new information and reflect evolving topics like Artificial Intelligence, a source said.
NCERT is currently aligning textbooks with the New Curriculum Framework (NCF), announced last year. This process is expected to complete by 2026, with some new textbooks for classes 3 and 6 already introduced. The full rollout of new textbooks for all classes will take about two years.
The move aims to ensure educational materials are relevant and updated, providing students with the latest knowledge as the academic landscape evolves.
