Between January 20 and July 22 this year, 1,703 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Among them, 1,562 were men and 141 were women. Most deportees were from Punjab (620), Haryana (604), Gujarat (245), and Uttar Pradesh (38). Deportations were carried out through various means, including military and chartered flights operated by US authorities, as well as commercial flights from Panama and the US.

In a written response to MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the Minister said the government had expressed strong concern to US authorities over the treatment of deportees. Particular issues were raised about the use of shackles on women and children, and the disregard for cultural sensitivities like turbans and dietary needs. No such complaints have been received since February 5.

On the matter of student visa delays, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it had received many complaints about difficulties in securing F, M, and J category visas. The Indian government raised the issue with the US Embassy and the US Department of State.

The US side explained that stricter security checks had caused delays but said that appointments have now resumed. Additional visa slots are being released, with special priority given to applicants in the physician category.

The Indian government continues to assist Indian migrants and students in the US through its embassies and consulates. Help is also provided via the MADAD portal and the Indian Community Welfare Fund, especially in emergencies and legal matters.
