New Delhi
In a shocking development, a judicial panel has recommended the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, after a fire at his Delhi home led to the discovery of crores in burnt and partially burnt cash. The fire occurred on the night of March 14 at his official residence in Tughlak Crescent. While initially seen as accidental, it revealed large amounts of damaged currency hidden inside the house, raising serious concerns of possible corruption.
A three-judge inquiry panel investigated the incident and found enough evidence to suggest Justice Varma’s removal. Their report has been submitted to the Supreme Court, and the case could now move forward under Article 124(4) of the Constitution, which allows for a judge's impeachment.
There has been no official response yet from Justice Varma or the judiciary. However, legal experts say this could become a rare case of a High Court judge facing removal. The matter may now be referred to the Chief Justice of India, the President, and possibly Parliament.
The incident has sparked widespread public debate on judicial accountability, putting the spotlight on transparency within the legal system. The coming days could mark a significant moment in the history of Indian judiciary.
