As India nears the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975, senior BJP leaders have stepped up criticism of the Congress era, highlighting differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance.
At a public event in Cuttack, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan referred to the Allahabad High Court ruling that found then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice, which triggered the Emergency. Pradhan said Gandhi violated the law and tried to cling to power by undermining the Constitution.
The BJP is planning a nationwide campaign to mark the anniversary of the Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, during which civil liberties were curbed and democratic institutions brought under central control.
Alongside this, the party is celebrating 11 years of Modi’s leadership. BJP MP Hukmdev Narayan Yadav told that Modi’s governance will be remembered for centuries, unlike those who focus only on preserving family legacies.
He praised projects like the Chenab Bridge and said leaders like Farooq Abdullah also appreciated Modi’s development work.
According to Yadav, the last 11 years under Modi have shown real progress across culture, economy, and nationalism—unlike past regimes.
As political tensions rise, the BJP aims to use the Emergency anniversary to push its narrative of development and good governance versus dynastic politics.
