Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the traditional Bodo dance, ‘Bagurumba,’ will be performed on a grand scale in Guwahati this October, with over 10,000 youths participating. After successfully promoting dances like Bihu and Jhumoir globally, the Assam government aims to bring Bagurumba to the international stage. In October, more than 10,000 youths will perform Bagurumba in Guwahati to popularize this beautiful Bodo dance form, Sarma said.
This announcement follows the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, where over 7,500 artists performed the Jhumoir dance at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, an event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Assam also set a Guinness World Record on April 14, 2023, for the largest Bihu dance performance, with 11,304 dancers and drummers.
Bagurumba, known as the Dance of the Butterflies, is a significant part of the Bodo community’s culture. Performed mainly by Bodo women during the Bwisagu festival, it symbolizes harmony with nature. Dancers, dressed in traditional attire like Dakhona and Jwmgra, mimic the graceful fluttering of butterflies.
With this massive performance in October, Assam is reinforcing its commitment to showcasing and preserving its rich cultural heritage, bringing Bagurumba to a global audience and celebrating the traditions of the Bodo community.
