Director Tharun Moorthy recently shared that Jyothika was initially considered for the female lead in Thudarum opposite Mohanlal, before Shobana was cast. Moorthy, explained that while Shobana was always the preferred choice for the role, there was some uncertainty about how to approach her. This led the team to consider Jyothika, who was impressed with the script and showed interest in the role.
However, due to prior family commitments, including a planned world tour, Jyothika had to step back from the project. Moorthy mentioned that despite her love for the script, her travel plans clashed with the film’s schedule. As a result, the team approached Shobana once again, which Moorthy felt was the perfect decision. He noted that the idea of reuniting Mohanlal and Shobana, a pairing beloved by Malayali audiences, felt natural and special.
Moorthy also addressed concerns about the genre of Thudarum, which some initially labeled as a crime thriller. He clarified that the film is, at its core, a family drama, and he hopes the audience embraces it as such. The movie, marking the long-awaited reunion of Mohanlal and Shobana after 15 years, is set to release on April 25, 2025, promising a heartfelt story for audiences.
