"Kerebete" delves into the raw realities of existence for two young lovers in a secluded village nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Malnad region. Here, the oppressive shadows of class and caste prejudices loom large, fracturing the harmony within families and casting divisions across communities.
The story begins with Naga (Gowrishankar) kidnapping Meena (Bindhu Shivram) and the police embarking on a search. The histories of Naga and Meena that the families and the villagers narrate to the police do not match and the cops realize that they are dealing with something bigger.
As the narrative unfolds, the film touchingly captures the struggles and dilemmas faced by the protagonists, grappling with societal norms that dictate whom they can love and marry. Yet, amidst the turmoil, "Kerebete" boldly poses the fundamental question: can love transcend the barriers erected by tradition and prejudice?
With meticulous attention to detail, the movie intricately weaves together the tapestry of the region's rich cultural heritage, immersing viewers in its vibrant traditions and customs. The scenes of an actual 'Kerebete' (fish hunting) involving hundreds of people is breathtaking. The use of the local dialect, rituals and customs gives the film an exotic feel. The biggest positive of the narration is that it never loses sight of its primary objective—to entertain the audiences with a compelling story that also resonates on a deeply human level.
The lead pair displays a commendable performance that is makes the story convincing. The supporting cast is made up of some of the best actors in the industry including Sampath Maitreya and Gopal Krishna Deshpande who make the screen their own.
Through its arresting visuals and authentic portrayal of village life, "Kerebete" offers a moving reflection on the resilience of love in the face of adversity. It challenges viewers to ponder the complexities of societal norms while delivering an engaging and emotionally resonant cinematic experience.
