Karnataka caps multiplex ticket rates for Kannada films

The Karnataka government has reinstated a Rs 200 cap on movie ticket prices across the state, including in multiplexes, aiming to make cinema more affordable and support regional films. This decision, part of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s recent budget announcement, has now been officially implemented by amending the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014.

According to the new rule, no cinema hall—regardless of film language—can charge more than Rs 200 per ticket, including entertainment tax. The move addresses public complaints over high ticket rates, especially in Bengaluru, where premium formats like IMAX and recliners often cost between Rs 600 to Rs 1,000.

This isn’t the first attempt to regulate prices. A similar cap was introduced in 2017 during Siddaramaiah’s earlier term but was struck down by the Karnataka High Court after opposition from multiplex chains citing financial losses.

This time, however, the decision has gained support from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association. They believe the capped pricing will encourage more people to visit theatres and help boost the local film industry.

While this is a welcome move for moviegoers and filmmakers, multiplex owners are concerned about balancing operational costs with the fixed ticket rate, especially for luxury formats. The government hopes the initiative will increase footfall and promote Kannada and other regional cinema.
