Discussions about the construction of a second airport in Karnataka’s capital, Bengaluru, are gaining momentum. However, some state legislators have raised concerns, questioning the need for another airport when the city already has Kempegowda International Airport. If the Hosur airport becomes operational, it would benefit the southern and electronic city regions of Bengaluru. Lawmakers from North Karnataka, including Hubli-Dharwad and Kalaburagi, have voiced opposition. BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal questioned the need for a second airport in Bengaluru, suggesting that cities like Hubli and Belagavi should instead have international airports. While Tamil Nadu’s government is pushing for an airport at Hosur, near the Karnataka border, the Karnataka government is surveying land options for the second airport within Bengaluru’s expanding metropolitan area. However, this has led to political competition among ministers, with some pushing for airports in cities like Hubli and Belagavi. In response, Industry Minister M.B. Patil explained that the current Kempegowda Airport would reach its full capacity by 2033, and a second airport would be necessary in the coming years. The government is considering potential locations, with Bidadi, Ramanagaram, Nelamangala, Kunigal, and Dabasapete being suggested. However, no decision has been finalized yet. While there is little resistance within the legislative session, the issue of whether to prioritize Bengaluru or northern Karnataka remains contentious, as gaining approval for such projects requires full cooperation from both the central and state governments.
