Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, visited Bengaluru University’s Jnanabharathi campus on Thursday to address rising concerns related to administration, staff grievances, and caste-based allegations. The visit follows the mass resignation of several Dalit professors and staff, along with mounting complaints about internal governance.

During his visit, Narayanaswamy held discussions with the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other senior officials. He emphasized that a university is a temple of learning and should not become a stage for caste or political bias. “We were nurtured under the shade of this institution. Its dignity must be preserved,” he said.

Referring to a recent incident where a professor reportedly mishandled Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s photo, Narayanaswamy confirmed that he had raised the issue with the Vice-Chancellor and demanded immediate resolution. He also called for filling backlogged faculty positions within two months and urged the reinstatement of experienced guest lecturers from the SC community who were recently let go.

The MLC expressed concern over the delay In establishing the Basava Lingappa Research Chair and improper use of the Ambedkar Study Chair. He insisted that professors from outside Karnataka should not be prioritized over local candidates for top university posts. Stressing that universities are not places for caste manipulation, Narayanaswamy warned of statewide protests if corrective measures are not taken promptly. He assured that the matter would be brought to the government’s attention and demanded that systemic reforms be initiated to protect the academic and social integrity of Bengaluru University.
