Heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon led to severe waterlogging on the Electronic City Flyover, causing significant traffic disruptions and raising safety concerns for commuters in the area. The flyover, which connects key parts of South Bengaluru with Electronic City, was rendered partially unusable due to the accumulation of rainwater.
According to traffic police and BBMP officials, the downpour, which began around 2:30 PM, resulted in clogged stormwater drains, leading to rapid flooding on the elevated stretch. Within an hour, vehicles began slowing down, with some two-wheelers and smaller cars reportedly breaking down mid-route. Traffic personnel were deployed to redirect vehicles and assist stranded commuters.
Officials have advised the public to avoid using the flyover for at least two hours until the water recedes and clearing operations are completed. “We are currently working to pump out the excess water and clear debris. Commuters are urged to use alternative routes such as Hosur Road and NICE Road until further notice,” said a senior BBMP engineer.
The Inci’ent has sparked fresh concerns about Bengaluru’s drainage infrastructure, especially along elevated corridors. Social media was flooded with posts and videos from frustrated commuters using hashtags like #EcityAlert, #BangaloreRains, and #TrafficUpdate.
Regular commuters to Electronic City, home to major IT companies, faced delays and office disruptions. Authorities have promised to expedite drainage maintenance and take preventive measures to avoid repeat incidents. With the monsoon intensifying in Karnataka, civic agencies have been urged to remain on high alert and respond swiftly to rain-related emergencies across the city.
