Social activist Ramya emphasised the importance of instilling confidence and emotional strength in women facing psychological and social distress. Speaking at a special workshop on women's and children's safety held at the Government First Grade College in Sulibele, she said the Santhvana Centre aims to support women dealing with domestic violence and familial conflicts by offering them a safe space and guidance.
The workshop was jointly organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Women and Child Development, and the Santhvana Women’s Helpline. Ramya noted that the focus is on providing immediate emotional counselling and resolving conflicts through close, face-to-face interactions. She also informed that women in distress can seek refuge at the Saadhara Kendra at the taluk level and the Sakhi Kendra at the district level.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. P. Sangeetha, Head of the Kannada Department at the college, said that women in India have built a life of self-respect thanks to the tireless struggles of past leaders. She encouraged girl students and women to pursue education and carve out a dignified and self-reliant life for themselves.
Renuka Kouchagiri, an officer from the District Women and Child Welfare Department, highlighted the role of students in nation-building. “Students are the nation's asset and should grow into responsible citizens who uphold the law and safeguard the country’s dignity,” she said.
The event also saw participation from social worker Nagaveni of Sarvodaya Shelter Home, Basappa from the police department, and Maitri counsellors, who shared their insights on legal rights and support systems available for women in distress.
