Heavy pre-monsoon rain has caused extensive damage to crops in Kolar district, with losses estimated at ₹1.21 crore.
According to officials, last week’s rainfall damaged various crops including the internationally renowned mangoes and bananas. An estimated 304 hectares of farmland were affected, comprising around 200 hectares of mango crops and 104 hectares of other horticultural crops.
In the outskirts of Kolar, near Basavanatta, farmer Vijay Kumar’s cabbage crop grown on 1.5 acres of land was completely destroyed. With rains subsiding over the past three days, farmers have returned to their fields only to find their crops ruined, leaving many in tears. They are now demanding adequate compensation for the losses.
Horticulture department officials have already submitted a report on the crop damage to the district administration. Based on this, authorities have assured that steps will be taken to provide compensation to the affected farmers.
