Bengaluru’s second airport’s decision lies with airport authority: DCM

CH News

The discussion over the location of Bengaluru’s second airport has gained national attention. While multiple sites in rural Bengaluru have been shortlisted, a final decision is yet to be made. The project has also led to a rift between two state ministers.

Home Minister Dr. Parameshwara claims the airport will be within Tumakuru’s borders, whereas Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) DK Shivakumar has suggested another location. Speaking on the issue, Shivakumar clarified, “The state government does not have the authority to finalize the site. The decision rests with Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI).” His statement has sparked curiosity, especially amid a political standoff with Parameshwara. Locations like Nelamangala, Bidadi, Solur, and Tumakuru are under consideration. Parameshwara maintains that Bidadi would be as beneficial as Tumakuru. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda has emphasized the necessity of a second airport in Karnataka’s capital during a Rajya Sabha session.

In response, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assured that the Center is open to assisting with the project. Additionally, Naidu referenced the existing agreement, which prohibits the construction of another airport within a 150-kilometer radius of Kempegowda International Airport for 25 years. This agreement must first be addressed before proceeding with a new airport. Expressing his opinion, Shivakumar remarked, “I dream of having an airport near my hometown, but that is unrealistic.
