Bengaluru is set to see an increase in auto-rickshaw minimum fare for a two-kilometer journey from the current ₹30 to ₹40. This decision was approved in a recent meeting chaired by the District Commissioner, with an official notification expected either this month or in June.
Currently, auto-rickshaw meters in the city charge a minimum fare of ₹30 for the first two kilometers, and ₹15 per km thereafter. The proposed hike would raise the initial two-km fare to ₹40, though the per kilometer rate after that remains under review.
Meanwhile, passengers have raised complaints against app-based aggregator companies like Ola, Uber, Namma Yatri, and Rapido, alleging they are already charging nearly double the official meter rates—collecting around ₹50 minimum for the first two kilometers and ₹30 per km thereafter. These companies reportedly set their own fares independent of government guidelines, causing frustration among commuters.
RTO officials have warned that only the government-prescribed rates should be charged to passengers. Companies found overcharging will first receive notices, followed by strict action if violations persist.
The auto fare hike proposal had been under consideration since March, with multiple auto unions participating in fare revision committee discussions and submitting driver grievances. District authorities have reviewed and given the green signal for the fare hike earlier this month, but the official order is yet to be published.
Passengers are advised to be aware of official rates and report any instances of overcharging to the authorities.
